http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10609407 13 July 2010 Last updated at 01:18 ET [Disallowed String for - ] type=text/javascript> The new measure of poverty assesses household poverty Eight Indian states account for more poor people than in the 26 poorest African countries combined, a new measure of global poverty has found. The Indian states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, have 421 million "poor" people, the study found. This is more than the 410 million poor in the poorest African countries, it said. The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures a range of "deprivations" at household levels. Developed by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) with UN support, it will feature in the upcoming UNDP Human Development Report. The measure assess a number of "deprivations" in households - from education to health to assets and services. "The MPI is like a high resolution lens which reveals a vivid spectrum of challenges facing the poorest households," said OPHI director Dr Sabina Alkire.

so much for one of the developing nations. handful of people will always be rich while the majority will suffer. good example of uneven distribution of wealth and competitive edge always favoring people who are rich.

What do you think? Over billions of them can not be equal and the cycle of economy is poor will go poorer and richer will be going to be more richer. Soon the newly top ten rich person will be from India. Did you read that news about Hariyana Farmers has the highest suicidal rate. सन्तान थरी थरी

conservatively recent world economy are pinning down Greek with debt unsolved, hence here in Asia, world society people seems forgetful that there "wombs in the skin mallciously becomes a sosial gap-syndromize" ..as in the pheri pheri label, India will be next world economy top ten super power. Back in Mother Nepal we have to understood that estimate by now ~ are an approx two million Indians living in Nepal , out from a total Nepal population of twenty-nine million at this present ..With the cruel capitalist economy fundament potray by India as mention by syanjali ji and the post of threads here..,then seems Mother Nepal still leaned and provokes align intervent from India...

We should also be interested in rates. Is India's poverty rate decreasing faster than that of Africa's? I think that the middle class is rising fast in India, and it's not only the top classes who see an increase in incomes. Like Nepal, India's biggest problem is corruption. They have one thing on their side - their biggest strengths - brains... The IIT's have done an awesome job in increasing the scientific and technological knowledge in India. I don't know if it's true - but a video I saw recently stated that "India has more smart kids that the US has kids (IQ must have been used to measure smartness). India has a lot of potential for the future. Whereas, Africa, has so many states that are close to failing - that are in the list of The Bottom Billion countries!!! (Sad thing for us though - The writer of this book talked about Nepal several times in the book).

The writer is trying to clearly compare with a super power and the real least undeveloped continent in the world. India is a super power from outside which they can be proud of but are real hollow from inside wich they need to work on. China has more population than india, how come china does not have the same proverty rate. There is proverty in China too, but for sure it is not in such a drastic size like in india. The ratio of proverty and and number looks so unhuman. People and goverment in india need to work on this issue of their own people before thinking about rocket science. Look at the ground before flying in the sky.

Thank you IamSarcastic: This is the trend now and going to happen it very short period. The gap between rich and poor will unbearable and unthinkable. In India over half of the population live exactly as Oscar winner movie. We are trailing them too.
I wish people living in Asia will know how to donate and be part of charity instead of giving to thugs ( Puja ajaa and the priest) who claim has the power and ticket to heaven (we still believe it). Because of these thugs rich people never got help or any thought about donating and building something that can be utilized by citizens rather than building temples. That is the reason specially in Kathmandu we have thousands of temples than other public places.
How many library do we have for public. let's start from Kathmandu the capital.
