Hello: While I joined Comcast they send me a box which was free and was unable to watch HD TV. When asked about it , they will send new box which will cost 8.70 each month. Same as the cable box which cost 5 dollar a month and can be purchased free after mail in rebate which I got it and no need to pay every month. But I have no idea about the HD box, if I can buy a box that will convert single to HD? How much it will cost and any special web. Thanks for helping and why should I make fat to corporate American company, COMCAST.

Why didn't you go to the store? I've got HDTV. The cost is 10 bucks, I think. It depends on state to state. Here in Cali, I pay 19 ( Can you believe it! ) bucks for HBO alone. Before I moved here, I was only paying 9 bucks. I'm not sure about converting and so on..

Why pay $9 every month just to watch HD tv, in 2 years I will be paying about 190. I am wondering if I can buy box just like comcast loans us to watch HD.

the HD service and HD equipments costs are bundled. You cannot buy 3rd party equipment for use with comcast. BTW i just got a deal from comcast with 20 mbps internet, HD premium channels and phone for 89.99. Total comes out to 100 with taxes and fees. (MA)

If you already have HDTV why to bother about setup box? plug the co-ax cable direclty to your TV u will be able to enjoy all HDTVs. The only thing will be the channels will be absurd like 35.0185 or 37.1125. This however doesn;t apply to premium channels and u won't have cable on demand. If you are fan of cable on demand than u need the box. Otherwise, just plug to your TV and save $10/mo.

Prettybhadra, is that a joke or something? ( or am I really missing something? ) If you have a HDTV, you need HD Settop box to enjoy the HD quality. Just having a TV doesn't mean anything. Also, Not sure if anybody's aware but HDTV aren't that compatible with regular Standard Definition signals so the images will appear blurry. In other words, there's no point of having HDTV if you don't subscribe to HD Package.

yess, Birodh you are missing something. I haven't mentioned that you don't need HD package but a premium package and HD package are different things . premium package refers 2 pay per view channels and some digitally encoded channels. If you have HDTV with QAM demodulator they can decode the HDTV channels . I don;t have HD box I still enjoy all the HD TV because my TV does the work as QAM demodulator. The only thing is I have channels like 4.2, 2.1, 2.2, . The channels with decimal point are digital ones. If you still have any confusions, let me know. You can directly plug in cable to your TV and search all the channels, then u will know what I am talking about.

That means rent the HD box for 8.70. Can not be bought box to to avoid rental charges? This how corporate America makes money, HD channel available, with HD TV still can not watch TV in HD mode and needed a HD Box.
It not funny, but I felt like this, going to watch 3D movie and you have to rent the glass or carry one with you.

@syanjali I am also leasing the hd box for $7 a month from comcast. You can always buy comcast approved hd box like cisco hd box. You can buy from eBay or craiglist. Connect the co-ax cable and call 1-800 number with the serial number to activate the box. But talk to comcast b4 buying. Some hd box use smart card inside hd box so make sure with an authorized representative.

Dish network has internet capacity and it can be used for VOIPhone ? Furke it would be nice if you have paste the web.I am guessing new TV's are built in HD converter/receiver box and no need to buy or rent.

I agree with perrybhadra. If you need HD channels, just plug in your comcast coax cable to TV and use your TV tuner to get the channels. However, you do need ATSC/QAM tuner in your TV which most of the newer HDTV comes by default. Again as perrybhadra mentioned, you will not get all the channels as some channels are encrypted. But you will get over hundreds of free HD channels.
I do use HD box from comcast but I did tried to tune in my HDTV directly using coax cable and I was able to tune in hundreds of channels for free. I have to use HD box because I have premium movie channels.

@sona, How much does the equipment cost? Is there annual fee? Are the pictures sharp like satellite tv channels? What internationAl programming you are talking about? Do you get like Hindi channels, Nepali channels? And you can watch on tv right? Not a computer? Please reply. It is totally new to me.
