I am with you on this one. Jyapu is a derogatory term used to identify Newars and a newspaper should be more considerate of such derogatory ramifications. Even if it said Newar Muskan, it is still discriminatory because a muskan does not know any caste or gender. The journalist is a crap castist pig.

JYAPU is the typical name for the indigenous farmer of the Kathmandu Valley.

What if I say  बाहुन कात्रो मुस्कान ? Does it affect anyone? If not, Jyapu is fine with me.

@hussian_khan  , you can write "  bahun muskan " but why are you writing "katro" ,you racist SOB ,take Katro back to yourself and your family.

All newars are not Jyapus, only the farmers among the newars are Jyapus.
I know lot of bahun chettris refer to all Newars as jyapus and that is derogatory.

Rahulvai you may be naive to the fact that some other castes derogatorily call every Newar a Jyapu. If you are a Newar do you have any problem when someone calls you a Jyapu if you are not a jyapu?

I don't feel anything when someone says to me बाहुन कात्रो. Do you feel anything rahulbhai? Assume your caste is Khadgi. I call you  कसाइ. Do you feel anything? Do you understand where I am going?

Rahulvai if you are jyapu then you won't have any problems with that word. But if you are newar and you're not jyapu, then obviously you will have problem when someone calls you jyapu.

Do you really feel superior just because you spend that extra time to type in Nepal?? It is my choice to write in english if you want to respond in nepali that's your prerogative but don't tell me that you're a better Nepali or a better Jyapu if you write in Nepali.

FYI, Jyapu is not derogatory term. There are infact many organizations that supports " Jyapu", Jyapu Samaj is one of those example. Jyapus are considered innocent and naive, hardworking newar communities and often humiliated by other so called elite classed newars, such as shreshta, shakya, tuladhars etc..but Jyapu are culturally very rich and proud communities and many of my "Jyapu" friends feel proud of that and I do feel proud about them. Maharjan, Dangol, Duwal, Prajapati, Awale, Singh (originally are jyapu but some twisted to put singh shrestha) are the common surname of  "Jyapu".

Neigther they are lower casete (untouchable) as some other newar castes like Shahi, Pode and Manandhar, Karanjit etc ( pani nachalne). However, non of these should matter now. So, I see no racial connotation on above photograph, as a matter of fact photographer might have wanted to project the " Jyapu" muskan as a adorable innocent muskan.

It is unfortunate that everything we see today observe and evaluate from " racist/etchinic" mindset. Are we that divided??

There are katro bahuns and non katro bahuns. If you call a non katro bahun as a katro bahun he will be offended too.

well most of us(maharjan) dont consider shrestha people as newars .. since more than 80 percent of shrestha cant even speak newar or know batshit abt newari culture ..

Mr shrestha babu, "Katro" means what you will wear when you will be put over the piles of woods and "katto" means what you are trying to imply!!  Precisely, they call it " katte bahun" to humiliate all the bahuns but not all bahuns accept " katto", only poor bahun would do that. I feel rather sympathetic to those "katte" than humiliate them!!

Again being igonrant  is a disease!!
