Gagan Thapa, the outspoken republic-advocate, and former General Secretary of Nepal Student Union, the sister-organization of the biggest political party Nepali Congress has issued an appeal urging the youth of the country to fight against the King's move. Radio Free Nepal received the appeal in email and is being reproduced here. Democracy and individual freedoms are not only the hallmark of the 21st century but are the inalienable rights of a nation and its communities and individuals. Today these rights are not only restricted within documents but have become a way of life. King Gynendra's assumption of absolute power in Nepal has not only caused a set-back to the national development but has also compelled all the freedom lovers to re-group to fight till the end using all peaceful means available. We the youth of Nepal represent the agents of change?more fit to invent, than to judge; more fit for execution, than for counsel; and more fit for new projects, than for existing business. No wonder our troubled nation has once again put her faith upon us. Inefficiency in tackling Maoists and corruption by the political leaders in the past fourteen years has been the basis behind the king's move towards the assumption of absolute power. But the past fourteen years of democratic practice has impacted the way people perceive their rights and freedom. Commoners have become more vocal in demanding their rights with the concerned authorities and that has been the greatest achievement of democracy in the last fourteen years. King Gyanendra claims that the democracy failed to represent the voice of people and is therefore, misleading and baseless. Nepal has remained poor and the justice has been curtailed since its unification. What about the corruption, inefficiency and injustices that have been perpetuated by the Monarch of Nepal for the past 237 years? Shouldn't it be raised as a relevant question? And therefore we the young ones of Nepal have been advancing the cause of republic set-up in Nepal. Maoist insurgency could have been tackled by the democratic government in its infantile stage back in 1996. But the army headed by the present King didn't allow for that to have a basis and refused to be unified on the side of democracy. And this has happened again, in the last month in Nepal. Therefore the present monarch is not the hero but a villain that has claimed the lives of more than 15,000 lives of common Nepalese and needs to be brought to justice. We the youth of Nepal have to fight our war on two different fronts at this critical moment of history: Monarch and the Maoists. Monarch on the one hand has shown its ambition of maintaining state power at all cost. Maoists on the other have not shown commitment towards the practice of democracy. Both the Monarch and the Maoists have established themselves as extremists with whom the democratic forces cannot afford to comply with until the Maoists change their stance theoretically as well as practically. We the youth, believe that we have a capacity to eradicate the injustices that have prevailed since its unification and to face those that are yet to arise. Security forces have entered the campus premises today. Many of our political and human rights activists have gone underground but only in order to consolidate our strength and come back with much vigour and enthusiasm. The bigger threat is to these young people who can make the things happen despite the risk. New Nepal cannot rest upon an elite few who have perpetuated crime for the last 237 years. But rather we choose to rely on those who see this nation as a place for all to exercise their rights and pursue a happy and life of abundance. I, Gagan Kr. Thapa in my capacity as a young leader would like to appeal to my entire generation that the time has come to exercise our capacity to make a positive difference in the national life in Nepal. We have two choices, we can either be mere spectators or we can take the responsibility to propel the nation toward a positive future. The latter choice will lead to a prolonged struggle against all the reactionary forces in Nepal and the former leads to a compromise with those forces. The latter demands the commitment, conviction, and dedication and the former requires total submission. The latter will allow us a free life with access to the state's resources and the former is a future wherein all the Nepalis dignity will be at the mercy of another. I have chosen the path of prolonged struggle that requires commitment and conviction, in order to be instrumental in realizing the common dreams and ambitions of my fellow citizens. I strongly believe that I belong to a generation that knows no compromise with their dignity, a generation that loves to live in a free and just world, a generation which believes in a peaceful movement, and I'm extremely proud to be a part of this generation. We the youth of Nepal have traveled our hills, terrains, and terais. The sweet smells of our nation runs through our veins making us restless to achieve dignity for our citizens as a nation. We assume this as our moral responsibility. I, Gagan Kumar Thapa, see the takeover of King Gyanendra as a glorious day in the history of Nepal not because it has abolished all the fundamental rights enshrined by the constitution but because this day marks an end of the monarchy in Nepal. I would therefore like to appeal to all the youth in Nepal and abroad to prepare for the peaceful movement. We have seen what we have been provided by our elder generations and we are not ready to accept it any further. Our motherland calls upon us and dear friends, at this crucial point of history we are being looked upon not to falter. We place our firm commitment in the democratic way of life and we believe that every single individual has the right to live in a dignified way. I call upon a total revolution against all the reactionary forces in Nepal, a revolution that is based on the premises of love and brotherhood, a revolution that guarantees freedom and dignified life for all. This freedom will be marked by the "glorious revolution" in the history of Nepal because it will be lead by the generation of the 21st century Nepal fighting for a new and glorious republic of Nepal.

I am willing to lead the country provided that you all refer to me not as king but as "Bhagvan" or "Prabhu"...As another stipulation, every week one of you will be sacrificed as my son will run you over with his Mercedez...In return, the country will recognize this great deed and your name will live in honor as a person who sacrificed his life to satiate the murderous appetites of the Prince. Paras tells me he looks forward to running over you all and your family members.

Ubquitious dude "........The only way you can get into politics is by building your resume from the ground and there is no into the politics unless your are affiliated with some political parties...." Well, no body is forcing anyone from being affiliated with any political party. However it is really shameful and disgusting to know that some so called student leader is jeprodizing the future of college and university students by creating an atmosphere of disturbance, fights and unnecessary tension in college and universities solely for the interest of some political party while in the process of building some resume of some student leader of a political party. Colleges and universities are absolutely not a place to create disturbance, fights and tensions in the name of politicans and political parties. If some one is really interested in building a strong political resume they better think of some "community service" for their local community. If Danga, fassad and unnecessary tensions in the name of political parties created by so called leaders like Gagan Thapa and others they sould be harshly procecuted.

Bhrasta Neta ji You have mentioned about Hitler and built an analogy with nepali political leaders, and you have compared gagan as some brilliant scientist who was working with Hitler. Now Dude, do you have any idea how Hitler rose to power. It was due to his propaganda that he would provide work and food to all and make Germoany a respectable state. In order to accomplish all those stuffs, he had to become a dictator. He did a lot for the german people, no one can write it off. But as they history is always written by the winners. Why people in modern do not have any sympathy for autocrats whatever good they do. I guess the American are other way round(They prefer cowboy-style president). Let us forget Hitler for a moment and come to Nepali grounds. Aren't Moaists and Gyanendra following same hardline steps as Hitler did. Whoever comes in power shall be an autocrat. Do you expect Maoists to be democrats? Do you also expect Gyanendra to be a democrat? It seems that you are happy to be a loyal dog to an aristrocrat master and eat the good leftovers he gives to you than to be a poor free man. If that is your idea then I do not have any thing to say except pity you. You have said that colleges are not for danga fasad and all those stuffs. And you say that you live in reality as you had suggested me to be realistic. I have one suggestion for you. If the MPs can have muscle-flexing in House (Golchhe sarki Versus Ram chandra poudel), do you expect the students to behave like cows. I hope it will a long long time to achive whatever hypothesis you are harping about. ........The only way you can get into politics is by building your resume from the ground and there is no into the politics unless your are affiliated with some political parties...." DO you expect a Harvard or MIT or whatever graduate dropepd from sky into PM's office in Singha Durbar? People in Nepal have changed. When Ram Sharan Mahat was a made a minister, people had to say was he had served in America or had foreign degree. Now one is going to be fooled by an American degree or whatever, until and unless they come in field and prove themselves. So Ubquitious is right. You have to have a good foundation before you have to add floors to your building. The essence of democracy lies in in agreeing to disagree.(If you believe in democracy) Some guys have all the luck, some guys have all the pain, some guys have nothing but complain.

atti_bho_atti_bho, did I smell budwiser here? You consider Hitler to be a great person, and then you go on to say " Let us forget Hitler for a moment and come to Nepali grounds. Aren't Moaists and Gyanendra following same hardline steps as Hitler did." ???? ***??? About being "a loyal dog to an aristrocrat master and eat the good leftovers he gives to you than to be a poor free man" - am confused whats your point here. Are you trying to say that GAGANE was the loyal dog to Girija and later got kicked out by the same aristocratic Girije? About "MP's flexing muscle" and "student behaving as cows" - oh boy, MOO FOR BEER? On a serious note, Gagane followed his masters without a second thought and thats where he failed. He was the one who said FSU election had to be held no matter what and later he kept on saying parliamentary elections can not be held. Whats the reasoning behind those two statements? About him being "brilliant" - I have no idea but please do tell me how many years was he in college and what degree did he obtain? Did he have the guts to speak against Prachanda's terrorism? When was the last time he made a press release against terrorism? NONE. Educational institutions are supposed to be peaceful zones, not some republicanist or monarchists playground. Public properties are national properties not some hooligans toys. Natural freedom is god given right, not some arsonists smoking tires!

I have personally know gagan for last 15 yrs or may be more ... known him when he was in Siddartha banasthali when he used to be one of the best student, when he was in Ascol with lots of note books in his hand, when he was in TC being leader in everything ... always respected him for what he is and what he has achieved. ... we were always with him whenever he was running in college election and beleive me he never lost and most of the people of his panel used to win just becoz of gagan.... he had such a charm in him .. he was (i hope still is) brillaint not only as a student but as an overall human being.. .... but he changed drastically after he joined main stream politics .. he was girija's more of sujata's hanuman.. totally controlled by them, once i heard him saying if you want to rise in congress you can't dare to go against girija or sujata or sushil ... or else you will be punished ...i felt so pity for him .... I thought if a guy of his caliber says such thing then what can we expect from others ....and thats exactly what happened when he was fired from VP of NSC maybe becoz he was getting more popularity than girija and girija was afraid...but saddest part is he never protested ... that show how much he is controlled by girija or more of sujata... we know sujata is not a leader n will never be one...... so how can she control guys like gagan???? and personal request to gagan.. gagan .. i don't know its you or someone else writing these articles in your name... girija had life time opp when he was prime minister back in 2048 if he had done anything good for country we would have never heard of anything called Maoist your leaders were all for money money n money .....Nepalese people had given your leaders 16 yrs to work ...now lets give 3 yrs to King.. if this won't work out i promise you i will be with you shouting for republic but till then it would be great if we can let someone work... coz its out future .. maybe politics job for you but this decides mine, my son's and grandson's future... 3 yrs is not much time maybe its been 3 yrs we last had a long chat .. but this 3 yrs is tooo precious for us? please come out of your personal ego and your idolism ?.. live in realistic life ?. I want peace n so do 25 million Nepalese ?.so please??

Atti Bho dude Well, what your are essentially saying is that it is absolutely ok to build a solid political foundation by first starting as a student leader and are you trying to tell me that as a student leader it is absolutekly ok to create danga, fassad and unwanted tension solely in the interst of some political party that student leader is associated with therefore jeprodizing the safety(in the short term) and future(in the long run) of thousands of students of colleges and universities in the process of becoming a political leader. I think it is absolutely shameful and disgusting to see some so called student leaders like Gagan Thapa feels ok to jeprodize the safety and future of thousands of students of colleges and universities so that they can build their political resume. I have no problem if either Gyane or the Maoists hack such so called political leaders to death.
