Nepal sail into last four
9 April 2006

CHITTAGONG: A brace from Pradeep Maharjan helped Nepal cruise into the semi-final of the inaugural AFC Challenge Cup beating India 3-0 at the MA Aziz Stadium here on Sunday.

Nepal started offensively against their less-experienced rivals and mounted many attacks at the rival citadel since the beginning. Their efforts bore fruits in the 15th minute when Maharjan opened their account. Surendra Tamang’s shot on a Bijay Gurung corner rebounded from Indian defender N. Pradeep and an alert Maharjan slammed the ball in.

Maharjan doubled their advantage in the 26th minute when his shot on a Raju Tamang corner was deflected by an Indian defender and hit the left post before sailing into the net.

Two minutes later, Basanta Thapa’s scorcher from about 20 yards found the back of the net. India got a chance in the very next minute but Vimal Pariyar’s shot was parried away by Nepal custodian Bikash Malla.

The Nepalese team kept the momentum going after the restart but failed to improve the scoreline. In the 66th minute, Surendra Tamang had a golden opportunity on a cross from Bijay Gurung but his shot went wide while Raju Tamang and Basanta Thapa missed sitters in the 83rd and 84th minutes respectively.

Nepal coach Shyam Thapa expressed happiness over his team's performance. “My team clicked at the right moment. We took the lead which put the inexperienced Indian side under pressure,Ehe said. “India also played well and they tried hard to make a comeback into the match but in vain."

India’s Uzbek coach Islam Akhmedov said his team collapsed within ten minutes of the game. “We conceded goals early into the match and it was all over then itself,Ehe said.

Nepal will face Sri Lanka in the semi-final on April 12.

Congrats boys, great job, wishing same results against SL.
Vimal Pariyar is also an Indian of Nepali origin, so it was Nepalese domination in the match.
Sadly, with raging fire back home, the black smoke blanketed the great victory, but it also provided the silver lining, that not everything is lost yet.
Wishing for wisdom and quick settlement of grieviences in Nepal.

.Nepal and SL reached in to semi final almost with same stat. Both of them have drawn during their group match and scored 3 against the opponent in Qfinal to book in last 4. Hence, Sfinal would come up with new strategies in them.

On other side, Kyrgyzstan won over Palestine. And, one more Qfinal: Bangaladesh vs Tajikistan is on today.
I would like to see Nepal vs Bangaladesh in the FINAL, and we will knock them out on their home soil.

Wishing for the better performance against SL in Sfinal.

Congratulation !!!

Ya guys!!!! we will definetly outplay Sri Lanka in Semis........!!!

----------------
hi Kalekrishna, Im curious to know abt Vimal Pariyar, his nick seems like Nepali. Do u know where is he from? Of course he was the best striker from Indian side.

-----------

One more good news, Bangladeshi clubs are totally impressed by Nepali Rookies and ready to pay as much as 2000 Dollars per month (ya 2 thousand). Thats good news in Nepali football. Seems professionalism is groiwng in NEpali football. It is heard that there is big Bargaining goin over Pradeep Maharjan, the highest goal scorere in tournament so far. And For Bijay Gurung and Surendra Tamang clubs r offering 1500 dollars PM.

Hi Neural, hear say only, (don't quote me here), Vimal, Sunil Chetri are famous names in Indian domestic football cicuits and they are from Assam.
Baichung and another Lepcha boy from Sikkim are also in top rank.
Great news atleast, some source of income for the cash lacking Nepali footballers, and hope that opens their flood gates of opportunities.

Nepal ready to thrash Sri Lanka to reach fINAL..

-----------------

CHITTAGONG: Nepal and Sri Lanka, rank pre-tournament outsiders, will clash in the first semi-final of the AFC Challenge Cup on Wednesday at the MA Aziz Stadium here.

For Sri Lanka, it is a revival beyond imagination after the team was disbanded following their disastrous performance in the SAFF Championship last December while Nepal, on the other hand, had to bank on a favour by Bhutan despite some rock-solid display of football in the group stages.

The teams have so far faced each other on eight occasions in which Sri Lanka won four times and Nepal twice. Two other matches ended in draws.

“We won’t have to go through the tension of qualification now and the morale of our players is also quite high after the victory over India in the quarter-final," Nepal coach Shyam Thapa told www.the-afc.com.

“Sri Lanka have defeated good sides so far in the tournament and their players are physically stronger than ours. They are also used to play in these hot conditions," he said.

“It is very difficult to move fast in hot temperature. In the quarter-finals also our players failed to impress in the second half. I hope they perform their best against Sri Lanka because it will be a big achievement for our team to reach AFC Challenge Cup final."

“I feel both the teams will have equal chances of going into the summit clash.

Pradeep Maharjan and our captain Basanta Thapa are still recovering from injuries but I am confident they will be fully fit for the crucial tie."

Sri Lanka coach Sampath Perera said: “We played a 1-1 draw with Nepal in the group stage but the combination of our players was not good then. Now, the team is well settled and their morale is also very high."

“It will be a tough match but I am confident that we can go to the final
