If people cared about the future of Nepal they would have done something back in the 1800's, biggest weakness in our civic participation,historically, towards seeking justification and fair grounds has been the revenge and vengeance but not the essence of root causes and effects thereof.
Clowns like Taranath, Gajendra mishra and mahaguru pandey keep on cropping up in every tumultuous phases of our history, chatoor chanakya like actors never crop up who can mend the fences and bring up the peace,stability and progress to a crippled society.
Rather history and fate would have it, as Bhim Malla once cursed our future, that either we are fooled by politicians like rup chand bista, nani maiya dahal,krishna bhattarai, madhav nepal,prachanda and alikes or dictator like Jung bahadur,Mhendra and Gyanendra and dictators wanna be like prachanda and baburams. Nepali people and their intellect has been so much challenged more by our politicians than any others.
Do you all remember when there was bycott of milk produced from balaju during marichman's rule? It was suspected that it had been radiated with overdose of harmful disinfecting agents? He simply denied and said he himself had tasted the milk and found no traces of BIKIRAN (radiation?) The prominent leftist of the time Rup Chanda said he also tasted it. No scientist dared write a single column in a paper let alone protesting it about the harmful effects of radiation overdose that might have on people's lives.
Some minister( Last name acharya) in Sher bdr's govt openly said that his background as a sanskrit teacher fits perfectly with the porfolio of science and technology because science and technology is what the sanskrit is all about. Sher bahadur, a London educated PM agreed to him and sent him to Japan in a tour so that in the no confidence motion one of the potential defectors had been prevented from siding with the opposition.
Madhav Nepal declared during Mahakali treaty siging time that whatever electricity Nepal produces can be sold to other countries than India by means of satellite ( Bhoo Upagraha). Not a single intellectual from the scientific community raised a question about the existence of such a technology nor anyone would forecast it.
If there was a stateman around our political stage he would have immediately asked for those people to shut up or go about doing their folk telling or pooja paath, but there were none, neither we have had a king as a stateman nor political leaders.
Backwardness and blood thirst that has ravaged our everyday psyche so rampantly in political arena is not a product of 10 years or 20 years of someone's rule. It's a collective byproduct of our historical,social and political stagnation as a whole society. Historically piled episodes of calamities that were the timely casualties are being put in the stage show for us in various epochs of our history. We, as a civil society, are the sole responsible party to this collective failure of an agile,upwardly mobile nation.
