Idol faces stereotype music
- ‘Cliche-wrapped’ chowkidar attire for Tamang upsets hills

July 20: “Hum bolega to bologe ke bolta hai…” sang Prashant Tamang, and the hills erupted once again.

But it wasn’t in applause for the local boy who has made it to the last 10 of Sony’s Indian Idol contest.

The Gorkha community from Darjeeling to Sikkim — which has been voting en masse for Tamang and even holding rallies in his support — was furious the Calcutta police constable was made to dress up as a chowkidar for the song telecast last night.

“This has humiliated the entire Gorkha community. Does the channel want to send a message that Gorkhas are only meant to be chowkidars?” asked Tenzing Khambachay, commissioner of a Darjeeling municipality ward, voicing a grouse the community has long held.

Hill residents hoisted black flags at Darjeeling Chowrasta when Calcutta police orchestra — where Tamang is the lead singer — performed to drum up support for their colleague. Protest posters surfaced across the hills and residents wore black armbands through the day.

“Such crass stereotyping of our community must be challenged and countered,” said Tshering Topgyal, a Kalimpong resident who had organised a vote-for-Prashant rally a few weeks ago.

Tamang was enacting Pran’s role in the 1974 film Kasauti, where Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini play the sahib and memsahib to whom he sings. Two other Indian Idol contestants played Amitabh and Hema in the spoof.

The row over Gorkha typecasting comes soon after a Delhi police booklet for Northeast students was found to reinforce stereotypes.

“How many times do we have to prove ourselves?” asked Darjeeling MLA Pranay Rai. It was because of incidents like these that the hill people had to struggle for their identity — a reference to the Gorkhaland agitation — he said.

The hills have been following with pride the progress of the first local boy in the contest, and voting away furiously. In Indian Idol, which is in its third edition, the fate of contestants depends on the number of audience votes they can poll after each round.

Last month, hill residents had turned violent when SMSes they had sent didn’t reach Sony.

Tamang needn’t worry that the text messages will dry up after the chowkidar act, which sources close to him said he had been unwilling to do.

“It is now time for the hill people to cast as many votes as possible,” said Khambachay, who wondered why Tamang could not have been asked to play the policeman he is.

Stray voices of protest against the youth did rise. “Under no circumstances should he have agreed to do last night’s episode. We have been voting for him because we believed he was one of us. He has let us down,” said Jyoti Karki, a community leader in Kalimpong, who wants him to walk out of the show.

But others appealed to the hills to vote for Tamang with greater vigour. A meeting in Gangtok passed a resolution to continue supporting him.

“Many people have felt angry and hurt with Prashant because of the way he was dressed for the episode. We appeal to them all to continue to vote for him because he was compelled to do so by the channel. We will take up the issue with Sony, said Kishore Moktan, the convener of the Sikkim Journalists’ Forum.

MLA Rai wanted an unconditional apology from the channel.

But a Sony spokesperson in Mumbai said: “It wasn’t our intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments. He was dressed to suit the song. Some weeks back, another contestant, Abhishek, had dressed as a Tamilian to suit the song he was singing. We see nothing wrong in it.”

This is why all the Nepali People throughout the world needs to unite and vote for Prashant to show these Indians. Prashant is Indian Citizen too but these judges and Indians are so bias and racists they want to make fun of Nepali people however they can. I know they are saying only a game.Even it is a game, if it hurts the feeling of Nepali then why should play at the first place? Indian Idol people know that it will hurt nepali still they play the game. Don't get fool by Javed's and Malik's comments just vote for Prashant. This is the only way to answer them back.

I donot think the judges are racist.They had praised Prashant when he was singing good.They are now scolding him only for his good.I agree with Udit comment for this gala.

Just calling shilpa as 'Popodum' could rage the indian populatiion so much...would not any nepalese get furious by depicting prashant as 'Chowkidar'-Was that part necessary at all. ??

History of 'defaming Nepalese' ...Why cant they portray them as the Warrior of the warriors 'Gurkhas' .....if not as 'Sepoy'- which prashant is.

No wonder we see so much of hatred twds our Chemak Rastra....all due to the ill way of defaming the 'Nepalese'.

Well Prashant dint have any problem to present him self in the show like that so ..........whats the problem??? It would be a different story if he was forced to do it or he was immature enough to think.

Let me tell one story(actually, its history).
In around 2017 B.S when Mahendra overtook the rule from people, in his eighth grade final exam one boy wrote mahendra is dede (eye), pakhandi, radiko chora, chor ho; yesle janatako chora chori ko ragat chuseko cha. The guy was jailed for more than seven years.

In case of Indian Idol too, I assume, there is no choice or freedom for the contestants. They have to do what they got to. I also believe, prashant would have not done this if he had sensed any conspiracy behind that. However, I also agree not to go for agitation since there are lot of people from IPS ( Indian Police Service) supporting prashant.

I agree that the Chowkidaar act by Prashant in the Robaroo show might seem racist for many. But I do not think it was intentional. On the other hand all this DRAMA is doing wonders for Prashant because he is getting the quintessential PUBLICITY that will help garner loads of votes. I think after Emon, he is the one who is PUBLICIZED the most within the show itself and that certainly helps.
For example, see Charu - She was the least publicized among all in the Gala 13 and that cost her big time. While Puja, who has a kiddish voice( a mile better than richa though) is able to survive because of all the highlight and sympathy she receives while crying the first time and then she was again a spotlight when her grandmother got sick.
So, in my opinion the amount of screen time occupied by the contestants has a major correlation with the votes received. Therefore, It would be better if we all (all nepalis)remain normal whilst Prashant is enjoying some screen time, if not, the organizers(not Mini or Javed or Anu) might be wary before they think of making Prashant do something again.
I hope I have made my point clear.

Do you guys seriously believe that Prashant will make it to the top 3? Well, I seriously doubt it. If he does, then it will be very unfair for all those participants who are more talented than Prashant. I see a very slim chance that Prashant will make it past top 5 because as more and more participants are voted out, it will be more difficult for Prashant to compete in the next round. For example, all the voters who used to back Charu will now vote for their most favored contestant and I seriously doubt that it will be Prashant. I also share the same sentiments as all of you but I have a feeling that Prashant is living on the edge.

As for the 'Chaukidar' thing, I think Prashant made an ass out of himself. Yes, I was offended in a certain way but I would blame it on him because he should know better that it was very defaming for the Nepali community...albeit meant to be in a light humor.

ok tell me who do u think is more talented than prashant to be in top three, sahayog is right in his predictions.

its just the judges and anchors who are manipulating things in their own way and making people that prashant is singing bad. its my own opinion and i do not believe that prashatn is singing bad but rather he is doing better.

To name a few...Amit, Emon, Puja, Deepali and Abhishek. These are trained singers. Please don't think I have anything against Prashant. In fact, I will be proud if he were the last man standing. But I am just stating a fact...a well known fact that he is an untrained singer which makes him very much vulnerable. For all these times, I had thought that Prashant wasn't just choosing the right song for his voice but now I realized that he is doing his best and that is all he can offer. The only time I liked his performance was when he sang Ya Ali.

As for the judges, which judge do you think is manipulating him? I think they have been pretty fair with him.

well everybody has their day prashant had good days and now not so good

you will see next week that puja and deepali will be worst (according to some of our friends in sajha) and you will say that prashant is better than those girls.

we have already seen abhishek and emon in bottom 4 due to their bad singing (if u say judges are fair)

REMEMBERING MY FAVORITE CONTESTANT THE ONE AND ONLY CHARU SEMWAL

Accept the fact guys, Prashant is one of the poorest singer of the remaining 9 participants. Regarding the issue of receiving comments from Judges, as far as I can remember, Emon, Puja and Smirit (all Bengali and Anu Mallik too is Bengali) has received far worst comments than what Prashant has received so far. If wearing the clothes of Chaukidaar is an issue, why did Prashant decide to wear it. And above all he was just acting and the song that has Pran character in the movie as a Chaukidaar and he was simply portraying it. Why such a fuss about it???

Without trainning Prashant has such an amazing voice. If he gets formal trainning, what is he gonna do? I seriously think Amit and Prashant has the best voice among all. Emon he sings like women in high tone. Without Trainning Prashant can give them tough fight, if he wins, he will get a chance to work with great musicians and he will improve a lot. Look at Pooja, Parleen, Abishek, Chang they don't have melody. With training they sing so poorly, without training I cannot imagine. Everybody has ups and downs. Prashant did too well in the previous rounds, the judges and public have high exception from him. Now when he is doing alright performances, the judges and people are not happy, they except more from him. People cannot always performe at the high level. Guys give him a breathing room. I think he is gonn give one or two alright performances and his level will rise again. So, lets support him and vote for him. He will definately do better after couple of galas. I didn't see Parleen's, Abshick's, Chang's, Pooja's, Deepali's and Emon's best performances are better than Prashant's. I think Prashant's alright performance is equal to these trained contestants' best performances. Only Amit and Ankita were better than Prashant. Rest is all built by judges.Prashant alright performances were made poor by judges. Actually, it is not bad at all.Listen all the contestants songs again, you will find it out.

Spot on!

I thought his performance last week was a big let down. His voice was barely audible and coherent. Although to be fair to Prasant, for an untrained singer he can modulate his voice with great finesse.

But at this stage of the competition, with each round the bar being set a little higher than the one before, Prashant must do the best he can and not simply depend on his huge fan base to take him to the next round.

I feel Amit is the only Stand out performer till date in this year`s Indian Idol!! Rest are all one step below him and that rest includes Prashant as well.I think Indian Idol is in that stage where anyone`s getting out wont surprise me barring Amit Paul. Prashant surely has a huge fan following, otherwise he wud atleast have been in the Bottom 4 last round!! He is a bundle of talent, that man Prashant, but for me he is always singing simiar sort of songs, or may b i got used to his voice and everything sounds similar to me!!! But as far as his performance is going with every passing day, I feel he is neither improving a great deal nor giving out a stand out performance which I had been expecting a great deal from such a talented performer.
But with the episodes like that about Cigarette with Anu Malik, then the Chowkidaar thing, and Votes not getting to Sony when cast from Darjeeling area, these are in all likelyhood, increasing the number of Votes that Prashant gets!!

I want to hear more from him and want to watch Indian Idol till the end so I sincerely hope that he does some outstanding singing as well!!!!!
