I am thinking of sending a nice cell phone set from USA to my relative in Nepal. But i am not sure if the cell sets in USA work in Nepal.

Any body can advise on it?

It must have simcard. otherwise it is not gonna work at all. I took one with me last year and I have to discard it becasue there was no simcard.

I think almost all types of cell phone sets do work in Nepal. But these sets must be "SIM unlocked". I think Dalli's problem was not the sim card but the phone set itself which might have been locked by the Network providers in USA. Please correct me if I am wrong !!

A cell phone that works with the simcard and is tri-band is going to work in Nepal.
Dalli simply unlocking the phone that works with simcard won't Work.
the key is.
Unlocked triband phone that works with simcard.
The motorola V3 Razr works in nepal. So does Motorola v551 or v330.
Personally I would send money to buy phones instead of sending phone to Nepal.
Trust me we in Nepal are so much ahead when it comes to cell phones than US.
Isn't that weird?

OKi,

My mom was here and she wanted to take back a cell phone with her, so she got this phone that would work there and here. I guess they have 3 different sets of chargers as different places have different voltages and all that. So if you go to a nice cell phone store and tell them that you want a cell phone that would work internationally or in Asia, I think they will be able to get one for you. As far as I remember it wasnt so hard for my mom to get one.

iZen is right,

not only GSM phone works in nepal but it has to be triband and unlocked. Only in America, the cell phone provider lock the phone to prevent from smuggling outside the USA and I am soo surprised that, USA is much more behind in cell phone technology compare to Europe and Eastern Asian countries like Japan, Korea and Singapore.

Even in america, there are 3 types of cell phone, One is GSM( Tmobile, Cingular) and CDMA( Verizon) and Sprint (TDMA). So if any of you took the phone from Either Verizon or Sprint, it will not going to work since they do not have Sim Card and also if you are going to take GSM phone from either Tmobile store or Cingular store, their all the phone are locks. Most of the people who works in the cell phone, does not have that much idea about the unlocking phones so if any of you interested to buy the phone, you need to find the store that they cell unlocked phones(triband 800/900/1800 MHZ). USA is using 1800 MHZ and EUROPE are using 900 and i think most of the Asian countries on 800 MHZ so make sure, you buy the right cell phone and make sure the phone is unlocked one as well.

hope this will help you Ocean

If you are getting free phone with your new service plan, then purchase the unlock service from somewhere. It should cost about $20. Just buy tri-band cell phone. Go to E-bay and purchase unlocking service. Buy a Nepali SIM card and plug it in.

Another great idea is - Buy a cell phone in Nepal, use Nepali SIM card while you are there. Then bring the phone to USA and plug in your old US SIM card. I think the cell phone in Nepal are not locked anyway. One of my friend did this and has good quality cell phone.

they have started putting out quad band phones in the market these days. lost in thought , ocean, and dalli resham IOzen is correct on what he said. Follow his advice and the phone would just work perfect in NEPAL. Dont' forget to UNLOCK the phone tho. It cost like $15-$20 over here and around Rs.2500 or more in nepal, atleast thats what I've heard.

Ok T-moible is the only one who unlocks phone for free after 3 months in US as far i know.MOTOROLA RAZRV3 (that u can get in T-mobile),its Quad band and u can use it anywhere around the world. If u just need phone its gonna be quite expensive (around $350)and they will charge you around $25 to unlock your phone.I bought it for 200$ that is one year contract and they r gonna unlock it after 3 months.

Lost in thought,

The Phones that works in Nepal are the Tri-band or Quad-band phones. Tri-Band phone uses 850/1800/1900 Mhz frequencies and Quad-Band phone uses 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz frequencies. If you wanna buy a phone here and use it in Nepal, make sure you get the phone that has 900 Mhz frequencies cause only 900 Mhz frequencies phone are capable for Asian countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc..If it is a Tri-band phone with 900 Mhz you can use it in Nepal but make sure you unlock it before taking it to Nepal. You can get it unlocked in $5 in any phone wholesale stores. But if the phone is a Quad-Band phone, you just have to buy the phone, you dont even have to unlock it..it is already unlocked and you can use that phone anywhere in the world...

Here are some Quad-band phones which you dont have to unlock:
Motorola V3-Razr(Silver and Black)
Motorola v188
MOtorola v300
Motorola v330
Motorola V551...

Samsung R225, Samsung C225 will work ne Nepal if you unlock it.

Most Nokias does not work in Nepal.

Sprint and Verizon phones will not work in Nepal cause these phones dont take sim card and uses a different technology CDMA AND TDMA....

Hope that helps!!

Thanks,
~nepaligurl~
