Pundit Narayan Pokhrel, I think, was a classmate of Babu Ram Bhattarai. Moreover, he was known for his charitable works, and, here is the crux folks, his opposition of king Gyanendra's puppet Bharat Keshari Singh who hijacked Hindu agenda and aligned himself with Indian Hindu leaders like Singhal and Nepali Hindu king. Narayan Pokhrel also supported multiparty democracy and opposed king's move of overthrowing the government. I seriously doubt it was the Maoists' work. Let's see what the investigation uncovers. May his soul rest in peace. Whoever killed him is a coward, a monster and deserves no less cruel death.

apparently it was the work of the maoists !Maoists accept responsibility for Pokhrel's killing (News update) The Maoist-affiliated Dalit Mukti Morcha (Dalit Liberation Front) has owned up responsibility for the killing of 47-year-old top Hindu priest, Pundit Narayan Prasad Pokhrel. BBC Nepali Service on Friday quoted a Maoist leader as saying that their organisation had decided to ?eliminate? Pokhrel for allegedly ?indulging in various crimes in the disguise of religion.? Maoists have blamed late Pokhrel?a charismatic religious leader?of indulging in sexual exploitation, amassing property illegally and trying to garner popular support in favour of monarchy, according to reports. It has been the preferred modus operandi of the Maoists to kill a certain person first and accuse him later. Unfortunately, Pokhrel is no more alive to respond to Maoist accusations. Pokhrel used to openly invite members of dalit community in religious ceremonies and encourage their equal participation in religious rites. Born in western district of Gorkha, Pokhrel started reciting ?Sri Madbhagavat Purana,? a holy Hindu scripture, from the age of 19. He had performed over 1,100 ?yajnas? (religious functions) and raised over Rs one billion from within the country for various charitable causes. Major political parties, rights groups and Hindu organisations have condemned the killing of Pokhrel and have asked the government to bring the culprit to book. A group of Maoist insurgents had shot Pokhrel dead at Ramapur of Dudhrakshya VDC in Rupandehi district Friday morning. His last rites were performed at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu late Friday. Hundreds of devotees and well-wishers paid their last tributes to late Pokhrel at Royal Nepal Academy and at Pashupati Aryaghat this afternoon. Pokhrel is survived by his two wives, five sons and three daughters, the state-run Nepal Television said. Khageswor Bhattarai, Pokhrel?s aide who also received bullet injuries during indiscriminate firing by the Maoists, has been brought to Kathmandu and is undergoing treatment at the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) hospital at Chhauni, the RNA said. nepalnews.com by May 06 05 Related News

What the hell this Maoist are doing? Why they are killing moderate Hindu activist? It is just because they want to give a message that Hindu might need their own military which can deal with them. This is really very gruesome act of Maoist. This will certainly encourage radical elements inside Hindus and may lead to formation of stronger "Shiva Sena" in near future. Why they are targeting Hindu activists? This pundit was just doing excellent work through his Puran trails and was instrumental in collecting money for charitable works like building Schools, hospitals and all sort of social works. Importantly, he was the one of the educated and most moderate pundit who was actively involved in eradicating inhuman act of barring so called ?untouchables? to enter into temples. It is unfortunate to read that he was killed by the Maoist-affiliated Dalit Mukti Morcha (Dalit Liberation Front). I felt really disturbed and outraged to read this news. Maoist want to divide our country in the name of religion, there is no doubt that if such thing continues the radical Hindus get upper hand and will start to make their counterparts. May his soul rest in Paranmdham. Hey RAM!!! God bless Nepal. Nut

And what the hell maoist are doing ? They are really gruesome, barbarian killers. They have no right to say them as a Politicians , they are really a highly terrorist. I have met Narayan Pokharel two years ago in one social ceremony in Ktm. He was really a good person and genuine too. He was saying to us that NRNs also can help a lot for the development of rural nepal. He was sharing his experience to us that how his class mates who resides in Norway has helped a lot to their villages in Gorkha. Although maoist accused him in sexual exploitation, and pro- monarchist, but maoist had to think that what he has done to the nepalese rural society. Financially suffered schools, colleges, organizations have been strong economically now. so this step was really gruesome step done by maoist.

Truly tragic! These Maoists should be punished for their dastardly deed. There's no trail, no jury, no cross examination just sentence and execution. Where are all the human rights organizations ballyhooing out for justice? Most of them stay mum or make obscure convoluted statements just for the sake of having said something when it comes to the atrocities perpetrated by the Maoist. People like Kankai are ready to pounce on the King or anybody associated with the current power base by trying to insinuate that this murder could have been carried out by "the darbar elements" before much is known of the case. Kankai Express just got derailed!

COTOB, You have the right to point finger at me for being rash: but what I wrote was truth, Pundit Narayan was no fan of present establishment. In early days of demonstration against royal moves, he even went to the street as long as I remember. But again, I really hope that Pundit will be remembered for his philanthropic, religious and tolerant life, not for his brief political activism. But as in his social devotion, he was on the right side of the history in his political affiliation, too.
