I just graduated, got my opt and started job hunting, no luck so far. Found a job posting in craiglist for Jr. Consultant and sent them the resume, they contacted me and called me for a meeting. I went there to find out that they are dhoti consultancy. They are telling me they will train me for a month free of cost and will find me the projects to work on from their clients and  I have to work under their company being their employee. They are telling me I will get paid if and only I am engaged in the project.........
Is this the process how dhoti consultancies work? or I am misunderstood?
I would really appreciate the information!

Dude

Here are my suggestions.

1. Respect your employer, regardless it's dhoti.
2. I was in the same boat in December 2008 ( remember the great American recession). I did approach few consultancy. All of them asked fee from me for a training. May be I approached the wrong employer. Your case is far better than mine.
3. Remember if you don't find job after a training, then there is some problem within you. Don't blame your consultancy. If A,B,C,D can find a job after some training then why not you.
4. Mean time you keep on looking for a job, even on craigslist.
5. Open an LinkedIn account and try to create professional network. Don't ask me how? And also remember this is not a facebook.
6.  Read this book "What color is your parachute?"
7. Try to contact your friends with similar background and check whether their employer is hiring.

My suggestion for you!!!
I am telling you because one of my friend did same thing and I am sharing his experience to you.

1. Be careful before you say yes.
2. Even if you say yes, don't sign any legal paper. If you do, they will ask you pay later to reimburse everything they spent for you if you try to go far from them.
3. Don't rely on them only. Search on your own too if you decided to go with them.
4. It's good thing to have training from them but don't sign papers for training too. They put clause and make you attached with them.

Please careful when you sign on any papers. (very important)

Personally telling, I waited for a while but never went to consultancy specially Indian. I am not discouraging you but be careful with them. I was lucky enough to get job before I had to go to consultancy.

Best of luck for job.

Regards,
UM3$H
